Goodbye To Cola

For a person who writes about health, it was quite a shameful habit. A Coke habit. Well, Pepsi Max.

I took it up when I had CFS and absolutely zero energy. It helped, it gave me a bit of a jolt and enabled me to do things I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to manage.

But it has such a terrible effect on the body.

I started on a can a day and was up to 4 a day by the time I gave it up. It’s like any drug, you need more and more to get the buzz. My teeth were suffering and my belly was bloated. Aspartame is dreadful for doing that, it is so acidic that the body desperately stores it in fat cells so it can’t do any serious harm.

I knew all this but was unable to give it up.

The final straw was an article in the Daily Mail linking diet soda to stroke risk. It said that women who drink just one fizzy drink a day raise their risk of stroke by 80%.

I don’t know how good the research (or reporting) was, but even if there’s a chance of an increase of stroke, that’s enough information for me. My Mum had a stroke (fortunately minor) years ago and my Dad had one last year.

Coming off the demon black stuff, however, was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. Pepsi was my only source of caffeine, I don’t drink tea or coffee (just don’t like them, I enjoy herbal teas). So when I gave it up – or tried to – I got the most awful headaches, which I eventually figured out were caffeine withdrawal. I mean REALLY bad headaches, the kind that make you want to give up and die.

So I had to come off it gradually, over the course of a few weeks. Eventually I realised that I hadn’t had a can that day and felt OK. Huge relief.

I can’t say I feel massively better, but it is early days yet and my body is still adjusting to life without caffeine. So I’m still feeling a bit sleepzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
